7th Annual ‘Excellent Thursday’ Lunch Raises nearly $14,000 for Charity

Excellent Thursday

Justin Mastores / April 9, 2021

Last week saw the return of our favourite event of the year.

After taking a year off in 2020 to hunker down from COVID-19, we were delighted to be able to bring back the Excellent Thursday lunch in 2021, raising nearly $14k for Limbs 4 Life.

Since 2015, Rees Group has been proud to host the Excellent Thursday charity event. We see it as a way to bring back the long lunch, taking the time to socialise and relax with our industry friends, clients and colleagues before the Easter Break – all in the name of raising money for a great cause.

This year, all donations went to Limbs 4 Life, an Australian charity focused on improving the lives of amputees.

Our last Excellent Thursday in 2019 was one of our biggest yet, packing over 100 guests into The Espy in St. Kilda. This year, as Melbourne continues to readjust to the idea of large gatherings, we decided to scale it back a little.

2021’s celebrations saw us hosting an intimate 2-course lunch in the beautiful upstairs dining room of Richmond’s iconic Union House. We’d like to thank all of our 60-odd guests this year for coming out, digging deep into their pockets and helping to make a real difference in the lives of Australian amputees.

In particular, we’d like to thank this year’s Excellent Thursday Champions, Scott Munro and Cath Upham, who have been coming out every year since day one to show their support.

The stars of the afternoon were, of course, our special guest from Limbs 4 Life –Program Manager Mike Rolls, who delivered an emotional speech about his experiences as an amputee and the type of support that Limbs 4 Life provides.

Recounting the harrowing experience of waking up from an induced coma to discover he had become an amputee, Mike went on to talk about how the peer-to-peer counselling & support that Limbs 4 Life provides can make a huge difference to recent amputees, who are often struggling to come to terms with their new reality.

The afternoon took an amusing turn after Mike revealed his (extremely) impressive golf average, sparking ripples in the crowd and giving our managing partner Justin Mastores a rare chance to dust off his auctioneering skills. 3 lucky bidders eventually paid $1000 ahead for the chance to go around on the green with Mike, forming a sizable chunk of the total donations raised on the day.

Although this year’s celebrations have wrapped up, we ask anyone who missed out to read up on Limbs 4 Life and consider making a donation here to help fund the incredible work that they’re doing around Australia.  Until next year, here’s to another Excellent Thursday.
